Talking about death and planning ahead at a local community event

A free Watford event is creating space for open, gentle conversations about future care and what matters most at the end of life.

Talking about death and planning ahead at a local community event

Why talking about death matters

Many people say they would like a “good death”, but few have the chance to talk about what that really means for them, or how to plan ahead. This February, we are bringing people together in Watford for a relaxed, supportive afternoon to explore these questions.

Creating space for honest conversations

Thinking ahead – a conversation about future care is a free community event designed to help people reflect on their own wishes for future care, and to feel more confident supporting someone they care about as they approach later life.

The session will explore what a “good death” can mean, both personally and practically. It will look at how planning ahead can help ensure that people’s preferences are known, understood and respected.

Understanding future care choices

Dr Hannah Cowling from Bridgewater Surgeries and Dr Sarah Klinger from Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care will talk through tools such as Advance Care Planning and the ReSPECT form, explaining how they can support clearer decision-making and peace of mind.

Our team, alongside other local palliative care services, will be there to explain the support available in the area and to answer questions in a calm, welcoming setting.

A relaxed, welcoming afternoon

Alongside the discussion, there will be refreshments and information stands from local organisations, offering further guidance and support. The event is being delivered by Rennie Grove Peace with the support of Watford Borough Council and Bridgewater Surgeries, reflecting a shared commitment to helping people talk more openly about death, dying and future care.

Talking openly about death and dying helps ensure that people’s preferences and wishes are understood, respected and acted upon. When we make space for these conversations, we help people feel safer and more supported at the end of their lives.

The session is open to anyone, whether you are thinking about your own future care or supporting someone close to you. Above all, it recognises that talking about dying does matter, and that these conversations can make a real difference.
