A spotlight on: Holly Akaster, healthcare assistant
I've been working as a healthcare assistant for Rennie Grove Peace for just over a year now. I can honestly say it is the most rewarding job I've ever had. I love being part of a team that not only look out for each other but make such a difference every day to people’s lives when they are at their most vulnerable.
A job that’s meaningful, in more ways than one
“The role involves providing personal care, managing symptoms, offering emotional support and making sure patients are as comfortable as possible in their own homes. It’s not only about the physical care but being there for both patients and their families when they are at their most vulnerable.
“Many people are surprised when they hear how young I am and I often get asked the question ‘You’re so young! Why would you want to do this job?’, but to me it doesn’t feel like work. I get to talk all day and build connections with people and know that I am helping someone to feel comfortable, safe and supported.
“I also feel like this role is a great starting point if you want to go into nursing, or become a paramedic, which is my ultimate goal.
“I enjoy the work life balance the roles gives me. I tend to work four long days and have three days off. Recently, on my days off, I have been renovating my garden, which is a great way to recharge.
“Before joining Rennie Grove Peace, I worked as a hairdresser in a salon and I loved meeting new people and building connections, but I didn’t enjoy being stuck indoors all day. I love the freedom this role gives me. I have my rota and I’m out and about all day meeting people and making a difference.”
