What is Hospice Care?

If you or someone important to you has been diagnosed with a serious illness, we're here to help - right from day one.

What is Hospice Care?

It’s about living well

Many people think hospice care is only for those who are at the very end of their life, but we’re here to support you right from the point of diagnosis. To help you live well, in the ways that matter most to you.

Hospice care does not mean someone is dying now, and it does not mean stopping treatment.

All our services are free thanks to the generosity of our local community who fund the vast majority of our services.

Living well Our Living Well centres offer free classes designed to give people the confidence to live well with their illness, supporting them to stay independent and improve their wellbeing.

End of life care Through spiritual, emotional and physical end of life care, we help people feel safe, supported and at peace – helping them and their loved ones focus on what matters most.

Talking therapy for adults

Bereavement support We help children and adults process their emotions, providing comfort and kindness. Supporting them to feel less alone with their loss and more connected to their community.

Extraordinary care, anywhere

At Rennie Grove Peace, we’re here to support you with compassionate, high-quality hospice care tailored to your needs. Whether you’re visiting one of our Living Well centres, receiving care at home, or staying in our Inpatient Unit, we work closely with you and the people important to you to make sure every aspect of your care – medical, emotional, practical and spiritual – is supported.

This short video explains how Rennie Grove Peace supports people and families at every stage of illness.

"If you or someone you know is living with a serious illness, you can contact us straight away. We will listen, talk things through, and help you understand what support might be right for you."

- Janethri, a Coordination Centre administrator

Hospice care is delivered free of charge to patients and their families.

From bake sales to marathons, monthly gifts to major donations and corporate partnerships to community collection boxes, every penny raised helps us deliver vital hospice care in our community.

Hospice care can support people living with an illness that can’t be cured and may change over time.

Clinically, this is sometimes described as a progressive, life‑limiting illness.

This includes progressive neurological and respiratory conditions (such as Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease and COPD), cancer and heart failure. We also support people who are frail due to age with our early support in the community and some Living Well services.

This isn’t a complete list. If you’re unsure whether hospice care could help you or someone close to you, our team can talk things through and help you understand what support is available.

Hospice care is a special kind of care designed to support people living with an illness that can’t be cured and may change over time.

This type of illness is sometimes described clinically as a progressive life‑limiting illness.

Hospice care doesn’t replace medical treatment or care in hospital. Instead, it works alongside other care to help manage symptoms, improve quality of life, and support both the person who is ill and those close to them.

Care is tailored to the individual needs of each person and is delivered in the place that is right for them. This may be in their own home (including care homes), at the Peace Hospice Inpatient Unit, in the local community or at one of our Living Well centres.

"The support I’ve had from Rennie Grove Peace to live well with my illness has made a positive impact on my physical health and mindset - as well as given me something to look forward to and a chance to connect with others."

- John Arnold
