Joining 143 hospices to challenge perceptions of hospice care

This is Hospice Care aims to raise awareness about the vital role hospices play in communities and to positively shift public perceptions of what hospice care is. The breadth of care provided by hospices is often much more than people realise. At Rennie Grove Peace we provide services right from the point of diagnosis with a life-limiting illness, supporting local people to live well and providing comfort, dignity and compassion as they reach the end of their life, as well as supporting those around them.

The campaign, which launches today (17 February 2025), is set to capture hearts and minds through a powerful nationwide TV advertisement based on real-life hospice stories. The goal is to encourage people to consider leaving a gift in their Will to their local hospice, to ensure that these essential services can continue to provide compassionate and specialist care for generations to come.

To drive home the message in Hertfordshire, we have partnered with The Hospice of St Francis to create a local billboard campaign that will appear over the next two weeks. Building on the awareness generated by the national TV ads, this local campaign will encourage people to consider leaving a gift in their Will to their local hospice.

How gifts in Wills help the future of hospice care

Around 20% of our annual income is from gifts in Wills, and we are using this campaign to encourage more local people to consider pledging a gift in their Will, to help us plan for the future and prepare for increased demand in the years to come.

Julie has pledged a gift to Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care in her Will. She says:

“My husband Bob was diagnosed with cancer on New Year’s Eve 2019. The next three painful years were filled with radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and numerous appointments.

“Bob was sadly never pain-free. In July 2022, he was admitted into the Inpatient Unit at Peace Hospice for two weeks to receive a constant morphine supply via a syringe driver. During these two weeks, the staff and volunteers were exceptionally caring, and the atmosphere and outdoor areas were peaceful.

“A few weeks later, Bob became very unwell and was re-admitted to Peace Hospice, where he received excellent care and respect. He sadly passed away aged 66. I know he would be happy that I have left a gift to Rennie Grove Peace in my Will to support their excellent palliative care, both in the hospice and at home.”

Tracey Hancock, our Director of Fundraising, says:

“We’re thrilled to be part of this important campaign that highlights not only the critical work we do but the wide range of care that is available and the lasting impact gifts in Wills have on our ability to deliver these services. Last year, we supported 4,550 patients within Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire but as a charity we receive only 14% of our funding from statutory sources.

“Gifts in Wills play a vital role in raising the other 86% of our running costs. With an ageing population and demand for hospice care set to increase, pledging a gift in your Will is a way to ensure that our vital services can be here for future generations.”
