Heather’s Story

“I used to think hospice care was about old people sitting around in chairs and being sad, but that’s not how it is at all. There are people of all ages who access the different services and it’s an up and cheerful place.”

Heather’s Story

Heather’s experience of hospice care

Heather, from St Albans, has been visiting Grove House since she was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. To mark the launch of our new Living Well centre, Heather is sharing her experience of the support she has received, how it has challenged her perceptions of hospice care and the difference it has made to her life.

“I used to think hospice care was about old people sitting around in chairs and being sad, but that’s not how it is at all. I have been able to access everything from chair yoga and wellbeing classes to complementary therapies and the Living Well programme. There are people of all ages who access the different services and it’s an up and cheerful place.”

Our Living Well programme

Our Living Well programme is offered free of charge to people who are living with a progressive life-limiting illness. It is designed to help people understand how to live well with their illness so they can maintain independence and enjoy life.

“Taking part in the Living Well programme was a really valuable experience for me. Just getting out of the house and meeting other people made a big difference. Listening to how others were getting on helped put things into perspective and reminded me that I’m not alone. Living with illness can often feel isolating, so that sense of connection was very important.

There were days when I didn’t feel like going - it’s easy to stay home when you’re not feeling well – but every time I did go, I was glad I made the effort. I always felt better afterwards.

At the beginning of the programme, we were each asked to set a personal goal. I decided to plant up some pots for my front garden. I did complete it, and now every time I step outside and see those flowers, it lifts my spirits. They’re a daily reminder that I can achieve things when I set my mind to it.

One of the unexpected gifts of the programme was inspiration from others. My husband and I went on holiday to Menorca last year - something we wouldn’t have considered if I hadn’t heard others in the group talking about their own holidays. It made me think ‘maybe I can do that too’. And we did!”

Providing physical and emotional support

Heather has also been able to access art therapy, reflexology and healing crystal sessions at Grove House, all of which have helped her to manage both the physical and emotional toll of living with illness.

“When I go to Grove House, I don’t have to explain anything. All the staff and other people there already know I’m ill, so I can just be myself. I can say anything I like. Everyone understands that being seriously ill can make you feel really low, and they’re there to listen and lift you up.”
