Lifelong fan meets Watford legend
Watford legend and Rennie Grove Peace patron, Luther Blissett OBE DL, made a trip to the Peace Hospice building in Watford this week to visit lifelong Watford FC fan, Shirley, who is currently being cared for in the Inpatient Unit.
During her stay at the unit Shirley mentioned to a member of staff that she was a lifelong Watford FC fan. Knowing that Luther Blissett is a patron and big supporter of the charity, the nurse made a few calls and arranged for Watford FC legend, Luther Blissett, to visit the patient less than 24 hours later.
Shirley’s face lit up at the surprise visit from the former Watford FC striker. She couldn’t believe it when Luther arrived at the unit and said to staff ‘I’m looking for Shirley’!
Lifelong fan, Shirley, was a season ticket holder for many years and has fond memories of seeing Luther in matches, including seeing him score a hat-trick for England at Wembley in 1982, a monumental moment as he was the first black player to score for England.

“When patients are admitted to the Inpatient Unit we really take the time to get to know them so we can tailor their care to their needs. This goes beyond their medical care. We want to look after each patient as a whole person, not just their illness. If we spot an opportunity to create an experience or memory for a patient or their family, we’ll always do everything we can to make it happen. This is what hospice care is about – it’s not just medical care for a person’s illness, it’s about supporting them to enjoy the best quality of life they can.”
