Walking the distance for Dad

George O’Dell from Hemel Hempstead is encouraging people to sign up for our Chilterns 3 Peaks Challenge, after Rennie Grove Peace cared for his dad following a shock mesothelioma diagnosis.

Simon O’Dell was diagnosed in April 2022 and cared for by the charity at home until he sadly died in August of that year. His son, George, took part in the charity’s Trek Vietnam challenge earlier this year and is now encouraging other local people to lace up their boots and tackle a walking challenge closer to home, to raise funds for our vital services.

“It was Dad’s wish to die at home and with the help of the Rennie Grove Peace team, that became possible. The team was amazing at making sure he was comfortable at home. We had them on speed dial and knew we could contact them if we needed them.

“The nurses also made planned visits and talked to us all about Dad’s care. They didn’t sugar coat things. They were honest and upfront, which I found very helpful. But they delivered difficult news with skill and compassion.

“When Dad reached the very end of his life, the Rennie Grove Peace team was there on the day he died. This meant a lot to us all. But their support didn’t end there. We were all offered bereavement support and the team checked in on my mum in the weeks after Dad died.”
