Help protect hospice care for families like Joan and Howard’s

Every day, people in our community turn to Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care when living with a life-limiting illness becomes overwhelming or unmanageable.

Our teams provide specialist care in people’s homes and in our Inpatient Unit, supporting patients and families through some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

But like many hospices across the UK, we are facing rising costs and increasing demand. Much of the care we provide relies almost entirely on donations.

With your support, we can protect hospice care for families in our community who need us now and in the future.

Joan and Howard’s story

“They didn’t just care for Mum and Dad; they wrapped their arms around all of us.”

We’re Kate, Andrea and Matt, and we’d like to share our family’s experience of care our Mum and Dad received from Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care.

Our journey began in 2021 when our Dad, Howard, became seriously unwell and from that moment on, we realised just how special hospice care is. What meant the most to us was knowing that help was just a phone call away, day or night.

During the second Covid-19 lockdown, Dad was only able to stay at home because of the Hospice at Home team. They supported him with such kindness and care, and made sure Mum was never on her own, even in the hardest moments.

As Dad reached the end of his life, the same carers who supported him for months were there, keeping him comfortable and calm. The day after he died, they stayed with us, something Mum always remembered.

After Dad died, we threw ourselves into fundraising, determined to protect hospice care for other families like ours.

“We never imagined we would need Rennie Grove Peace again so soon.”

Just a few years later, our world was turned upside down again when our Mum, Joan, was diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. We had no hesitation in getting back in touch.

Reaching out wasn’t admitting defeat, it meant having the support we needed.

Regular phone contact with the Hospice at Home team helped us manage Mum’s symptoms while Living Well sessions gave her time with people who understood.

As Mum became more unwell, the team cared for her at home with absolute respect. Their support helped her maintain her dignity right to the end – clean pyjamas, washed hair, cared‑for nails. These small things mattered, and helped her feel like herself.

Loving someone doesn’t remove the exhaustion or the fear of getting things wrong. Caring for someone you love is emotionally draining and physically exhausting.

Throughout it all, we made sure Mum was never alone. With the team’s support, Mum was able to die at home, surrounded by family, exactly as she wished.

Our experience has shown us how vital hospice care is – and how the fundraising behind it makes all of this possible.

Every family facing similar challenges and uncertainty of caring for someone with a life-limiting illness deserves to be able to receive the same support we received. But hospice care can only continue if it is protected.

Why your support matters

Your donation means that we can be there for patients, making them feel safe, comfortable and supported allowing them to focus on what matters to them and spend precious time with family.

Our care is not only provided in our Inpatient Unit, but in people’s own homes too, as well as in the community. It’s not just about end-of-life care either, we’re here for people from diagnosis, helping them to live well with their life-limiting illness too.

This care doesn’t just happen, it’s only possible because of the support of people like you and our local community through generous donations.

Can you support us today and help protect hospice care for families who need us now, and in the future? Donate today!
