Join our volunteer family

Rennie Grove needs you. We’re seeking new recruits to join our dedicated army of volunteers providing vital assistance to patients and their families.

Join our Supporting Hands scheme and you’ll be helping combat social isolation and offering respite to hard-pressed families.

Our programme is designed to complement Rennie Grove’s mission to help patients live well and be cared for where they choose. Services range from light house work and dog walking to collecting prescriptions, having a chat or a game of cards or simple companionship. Volunteers also provide an important link with Rennie Grove’s nursing teams.

Our call for more Supporting Hands volunteers comes against a background of increasing demand for our services. Alison Rayner, our Supporting Hands coordinator, said: “We’ve seen a spike in referrals to this service from hospice at home nurses who see first-hand how patients and families could benefit from some extra help.”

Previous experience is not required. We provide mandatory training. What we are looking for is people who are good listeners, who can give between two and four hours a week on a flexible basis and who want to make a difference.

According to Alison: “Families can be exhausted, on the verge of breakdown and desperate for respite support. Your two hours a week could change that.”

Volunteers can also play another crucial role. “Volunteers free up nurses and healthcare assistants to provide more complex care to more people,” says Alison. “In addition, they can give valuable feedback to nurses so they can respond quickly to pre-empt problems and keep patients safe and comfortable.”
