John’s Firewalk story

For the past eight years, John has volunteered with Rennie Grove Peace as both an Inpatient Unit volunteer and a Compassionate Neighbours volunteer. Having seen first-hand the difference hospice care makes to local families, he decided to take on the Firewalk to raise vital funds and support the charity’s work.

Why I took on the Firewalk

“Taking part in the Firewalk last year gave me immense joy – it was an experience that will leave with happy memories for a lifetime. Everyone was so happy walking along red hot embers with supporters cheering you, with a background noise of music and laughter.”

“I chose to take on the challenge to raise money for Rennie Grove Peace because the charity relies on fundraising to continue provide its services. The Firewalk seemed like a real challenge, an event I wanted to be part of. I was not disappointed. Of course, the icing on the cake was raising funds for such a wonderful cause.

Seeing hospice care first-hand

“As an Inpatient Unit and Compassionate Neighbours volunteer of eight years with Rennie Grove Peace, I have become part of an incredible team that cares for patients with a life-limiting illness. I have seen the love and care given to patients in the Inpatient Unit, and the difference one can make by visiting a patient in their home.

The difference volunteers can make

“Not only making someone smile, which is immensely rewarding, but also giving the spouse, their carer, a break so they can go out and have a bit of free time knowing their loved one is being well looked after. As a volunteer, I have not only helped families going through difficult emotional times but can say with pride I have become part of that family.

Why fundraising matters
