Scenic, Hilly, Eclectic or even all three. Whatever your cycling preference, this summer’s Tour de Rennie Grove has a course to suit.
Though each leg of the tour follows a 50-mile route, the resemblance ends there. First up is the Scenic, ambling gently through quiet leafy lanes and the picture postcard villages which dot the Herts, Beds and Bucks countryside before ending in St Albans.
That’s in the diary for the weekend of June 11/12. But if there is still life in the legs and your own day dreams of a king-of-the mountains-contest then the next weekend has the answer.
The Chilterns may not have quite the mountain monsters of the Alps or Pyrenees but the route boasts Whiteleaf, one of Britain’s top 100 climbs, and has scarcely a flat stretch along its 50-mile length.
Finally, over June 25/26 comes the third of our triumvirate, the intriguingly titled, Eclectic. It takes in some of the most densely populated areas around London, ducks and dives under motorways then spins along deserted lanes with gravel ‘centre-partings’.
Despite their disparities all three routes correspond to areas where our hospice at home nurses visit patients day and night providing specialist care.
Everyone who takes part in the tour gets access to their route (or routes if you’re in marathon mode) via Strava and receives a Tour de Rennie Grove cycle jersey. Anyone who hits the target of £50 per route will also get a medal. There is an entry fee of £10 per route or £25 for the three to help cover staging costs.
Rennie Grove’s director of fundraising Tracey Hancock explains: “Your sponsorship contributes directly towards patient care. Every mile you pedal could be another £1 towards specialist nursing care and support that helps families facing life-limiting illness stay at home, together, when every moment matters.”.
