Join us for an afternoon in the garden…

On Sunday 7 June, from 2pm to 5pm, you are invited to explore this urban haven of flora and fauna or simply relax and enjoy the tranquillity of the Waverley Road site. The gardens at Grove House offer hospice patients and visitors a peaceful space to pause, reflect, or draw inspiration from the beauty of nature.

Volunteer Head Gardener, Sue Hobley

A garden grown with care

Volunteer Head Gardener, Sue Hobley, has worked with a team of gardening volunteers all year round to get the space in shape for its annual public viewing. The team also works to ensure the garden supports local wildlife, incorporating wildflowers that promote pollination and attract a diverse range of species.

Nurse at Grove House

Regularly used by patients attending clinics or therapeutic gardening groups for those living with life-limiting illnesses, the garden serves as both a sanctuary and a source of healing. Each summer, it is opened to the wider public, offering everyone a chance to enjoy the results of the volunteers’ hard work. Visitors can expect to see a vibrant display of roses, peonies, alliums, and other early summer blooms.

Blooms, bakes and giving back!

As well as enjoying the gardens, visitors will be able to buy plants that have been grown by our volunteer gardeners, to take a little of the garden home with them.

Some of the volunteer gardeners will be on hand to answer any questions, and tea and cakes will be available to purchase throughout the afternoon. All proceeds raised by the event will be used to fund vital care for local people with a life-limiting illness.

The Open Garden will take place at Grove House, Waverley Road, St Albans, AL3 5QX from 2 – 5pm on Saturday 7 June 2025.

Tickets cost £5 each and can be purchased on the door.
